For a newborn, a crib is usually too big. Very small babies need to be cocooned the way they were when they were still in the womb. That is why babies are swaddled quite snugly when they are younger. A bassinet works quite well in giving babies the cocooning they crave. What's more, bassinets can be placed in any room without taking too much space.
